Living with treatment-resistant depression can feel exhausting, especially if antidepressant side effects have been difficult to deal with. It can feel like you’re running out of options. However, integrative psychiatry offers evidence-based treatments that go beyond prescriptions.
At Zephyr Behavioral Health and Wellness, we specialize in providing access to advanced treatments like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). Standard TMS is FDA-cleared for depression, OCD, and certain chronic pain conditions and is also used for conditions like PTSD and anxiety.
Zephyr works to make TMS more accessible by offering telehealth consultations across Colorado, while treatment itself takes place in our South Denver office. For many people, the biggest concern is cost and insurance coverage. One of the most common questions we hear is: Does insurance cover TMS therapy?
The Core Question: Is TMS Therapy Covered by Insurance in Colorado?
The short answer is: often, but coverage depends on your insurance plan and the type of TMS being used. At Zephyr, we believe in transparency. There are several different TMS protocols, and insurance coverage can vary depending on the type of treatment and the condition being treated. These factors can also affect your out-of-pocket cost.
Insurance providers typically only cover standard forms of TMS, which have decades of clinical data supporting their effectiveness. Before approving TMS coverage, many insurance companies in Colorado require documentation showing that therapy and antidepressants have not provided enough relief. Insurance providers also typically require a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Interest in newer, accelerated forms of TMS is growing because treatment can be completed in as little as 1–2 days and can offer faster results, sometimes in as little as one week. However, because these protocols are more intensive, insurance companies have been slower to cover these newer approaches. Our team keeps track of changing insurance policies so we can help you understand your options.
Navigating Specific Insurance Providers for TMS
While you’re always welcome to contact your insurance company directly, we strongly recommend having the Zephyr team help with insurance verification. Handling medical billing and prior authorization questions can be stressful, especially when you’re already feeling overwhelmed. Our team understands the billing codes and insurance terminology required to accurately assess TMS coverage and avoid unnecessary claim denials.
We proudly accept insurance plans from major providers, including:
- Cigna
- United Healthcare
- Aetna
Coverage varies by insurance plan and TMS protocol, but our team can help you review your benefits and next steps.
Understanding TMS Costs and Insurance Coverage
Insurance coverage for TMS can vary, especially between standard and accelerated protocols.
- Standard TMS: These protocols typically take place over four to six weeks, with one session per day up to five days a week. Insurance coverage is more common when standard TMS is used for FDA-cleared conditions like depression and OCD.
- Accelerated TMS: Accelerated TMS protocols are completed over a much shorter timeframe than traditional TMS. The SAINT protocol is typically completed over five days, while the ONE-D protocol is completed over one to two days and may be used for depression and anxiety. Both approaches are considered off-label treatment options, meaning they haven’t been specifically FDA-cleared in this exact format. These protocols are self-pay and not currently covered by insurance. HSA/FSA funds may be used with a superbill or letter of medical necessity, and our team can help with that process.
- Wellness TMS: Zephyr also offers off-label TMS protocols for concerns like binge eating, focus, anxiety, and insomnia. Research supports these treatment approaches, and studies in this area continue to grow. These protocols are self-pay and not currently covered by insurance. HSA/FSA funds may be used with a superbill or letter of medical necessity, and our team can help with that process.
